The Absolute Best Italian Restaurant in Chicago

The Absolute Best Italian Restaurant in Chicago

Chicago is a city of strong opinions and long winters. Both demand reliable comfort.

Italians have been feeding that need here for over a century, from the red-sauce halls of the near west side to the handmade pasta labs in the West Loop. I ate my way through old cottages and rooftop patios, chasing the city’s best ragu and a truly perfect tiramisu.

The vodka sauce is off-menu. That should tell you something.

These are the places I would wait in the cold for. Here is the list.

Worth the price, book ahead

La Scarola does not try to impress you. It simply feeds you. The room is old-school cozy, the kind of place where the walls have stories and the chairs have creaks. Portions arrive like generous friends. The classics taste like classics should. I ordered the tiramisu out of habit. It was the best I have ever had. The price felt fair for what landed on the table. Book ahead. The place fills up with people who know. I left full, slightly stunned, and already planning my return.

Piccolo Sogno takes you somewhere else. The patio feels like a courtyard in a town I have never visited. But I believed it. Pasta arrived cooked exactly right. Every single time. The off-menu vodka cream sauce is a secret worth asking for. The staff welcomed me like a regular, not a stranger. The atmosphere did the rest. It is beautiful, but not in a showy way. It feels like Italy, or what I imagine Italy feels like. I sat too long, drank too much coffee, and did not want to leave. I did leave. I thought about it all week.

The Village claims a title. Chicago's oldest Italian restaurant. It earns it. The cottage seating feels historic, almost secret. Homemade mozzarella sticks were superb. Crisp outside, soft inside. The sea bass with saffron risotto arrived delicate and rich. A strange pairing that worked. I sat in a small room and watched time pass slowly. The staff let me linger. The menu reads like a history book. The food writes its own chapter. I do not know if it is the best in Chicago. But it is certainly one of the most honest. I left with a sense of having eaten somewhere important.

The wine list is regional and top-tier. I asked for a recommendation and received a glass that paired perfectly. The espresso martini deal is exceptional. I had two. That is my own fault. The room feels understated. The service knows its craft. Nothing shouts. Everything hums. It is a quiet kind of excellence. I left caffeinated and impressed. I am still chasing that rabbit in my memory. It will not be caught.

The room buzzes with purpose. The staff moves with precision. It is not an easy reservation. It is a necessary one. I am still thinking about that ragu. I will be back. I will plan better.
